Here heaven stands beneath the earth, so that its rising strength and her descending gentleness come to meet each other: everything flows, unites, and blossoms.
The JudgmentPeace: the small goes out, the great comes in. Good fortune, success. Heaven and earth unite, above and below flow toward each other, and all that lives flourishes.
The ImageHeaven and earth unite: the image of peace. Thus the ruler apportions and completes the courses of heaven and earth, and stands by the people. Peace is not a rest break but the best working weather there is: right now the time wants to be ordered, apportioned, and made fruitful.
InterpretationOne of the happiest signs in the book: the great forces work together, communication flows, what you undertake meets with cooperation. You recognize it in times of blossoming: a relationship that carries you, a body that cooperates again, a team that runs, a period in which things simply work out. The task is counterintuitive: work hard precisely now. The Image does not put the ruler in a hammock but to work: dividing and completing, ordering and sharing, so that the good time leaves behind structure that survives the bad. Merely consuming eats the peace away; cultivating extends it. And remember without gloom: this season too is a season.

Nine at the beginning
Pull up the grass and the sod comes with it:
each according to its kind. Undertakings bring good fortune. In good times, kindred spirits hang together like grass roots: set one in motion and you get the whole group. This is the moment to begin something together; your initiative naturally lifts others along. Do not wait for consensus in advance; begin well, and support grows with the first steps. Sharing momentum is the strength of this time.
Nine in the second placeruling line
Bearing with the unformed, wading through the great water, not neglecting what is distant, not favoring your own circle:
this is how you walk the middle way. Prosperity tests the breadth of your character: bear with the difficult ones too, dare the great crossing, do not forget the things and people far away, and let no favoritism take root. In good times a leader shows himself in what he tolerates and what he does not let slide. Holding the middle here is active work, not a golden average.
Nine in the third place
No plain without a slope, no going without a return.
Persevering in danger leaves you without blame; do not complain about this truth and enjoy the happiness you still have. In the midst of blossoming, this line recalls the law of the seasons: nothing stays by itself. That is no reason for gloom but for savoring: enjoy more deeply because it is finite, and build reserves without turning sour over it. Only those who do not know autumn waste their summers.
Six in the fourth place
He comes fluttering down, without boasting of his riches, side by side with his neighbor, open-hearted and sincere.
In times of prosperity, come down simply: seek the company of those placed lower without displaying your position or possessions. Genuine equality, offered from above to below, counts double, and it builds the bonds that survive every later crisis. Staying ordinary at the peak earns you friends for the valley years.
Six in the fifth placeruling line
The ruler Yi bestows his daughter in marriage:
blessing comes, and supreme good fortune. The highest joins of his own free will with what stands lower: the royal marriage downward. Power, knowledge, or advantage, shared without coercion and without condescension, founds a blessing that carries for generations. Share your advantage generously; it is the seed that yields the richest harvest in this sign.
Six at the top
The wall falls back into the moat.
Use no army now; proclaim your commands in your own city. Perseverance brings humiliation. Every peace ends; the wall that was built from the moat one day sinks back into it. Do not fight the tide at that moment with grand campaigns: they squander what is still left. Confine yourself to your own circle, keep order and dignity there, and save what is truly of value. A dignified retrenchment is not a defeat but seasonal work.
