Heaven is the first of the eight trigrams and the simplest to draw: three solid lines, without a single break. Richard Wilhelm calls it The Creative. It stands for strength that moves of its own accord and does not stop.

Three strong lines

The image from nature is the sky: not as a place where something lives, but as the movement overhead that never stands still. Day follows night, season follows season, and it carries on without anyone having to push it. That tirelessness is the heart of the trigram.

You can see it in the structure. All three lines are yang, from bottom to top. There is no soft spot where something from outside could enter, and no line that holds back. The quality tradition gives it is therefore short: strong. Strong here does not mean hard or loud, but persistent. It is strength that knows its own direction and keeps following it.

How Heaven shows up

Heaven is the moment you begin something because you want to, not because you have to. An entrepreneur who has a plan and works on it again every day. A teacher who gives a class direction without forcing it. Someone who makes the call in a meeting and then also takes responsibility for what follows.

The trigram has a shadow side too. Strength with nothing to receive it becomes one-sided. If all you do is push, one day you notice that nobody is following any more. So Heaven always comes with a question: where does your strength land, who or what receives what you set in motion? In the I Ching that is the role of Earth, and the two belong together like breathing in and breathing out.

The father and the horse

In the family of eight, Heaven is the father. The reasoning is simple: this trigram consists of nothing but yang, Earth of nothing but yin, and from their meeting the six other trigrams arise as their children. The father here stands for the one who gives direction and keeps the overview, not for the one who does everything alone.

Heaven's animal is the horse: fast, strong and able to keep going for a long time. In the body it belongs to the head, the part that sits on top and leads the rest. In the arrangement of King Wen, the order Wilhelm calls the later heaven, Heaven stands in the northwest, at late autumn and the start of winter. That is a striking place for the strongest figure. It is the time when light and dark wrestle with each other, and when strength has to prove itself instead of simply flowing.

Heaven below, Heaven above

When Heaven is at the bottom of your hexagram, the strength is in you. Your inner attitude is determined, you know what you want and you have the energy to do it. The question is mainly what the outside world does with it. In hexagram 11, Peace, Heaven lies beneath Earth. The strength rises, the receptive sinks, and so they meet. It is the image of a time when things come together smoothly.

When Heaven is at the top, the strength comes from outside, or belongs to the way you present yourself to the world. That can mean support, but also distance. In hexagram 12, Standstill, Heaven is above and Earth below. At first glance that is the natural order, but here the two pull away from each other: heaven rises, earth sinks, and there is no contact left. They are the same two trigrams as in hexagram 11, only turned around. It shows how the position of a trigram can reverse the whole story.

When Heaven doubles itself, in hexagram 1, The Creative, there is nothing but strength, within and without. That is a rare and demanding situation: almost anything is possible, as long as you respect the pace and the right moment.
