Innocence
無妄Wú Wàng
☰ Heaven above, ☳ Thunder below
Thunder moves beneath the wide heaven and in doing so naturally follows heaven's law: thus arises the theme of innocence, action that is spontaneous and yet perfectly, naturally true.
The JudgmentInnocence: sublime success, furthered through perseverance. Whoever is not as he should be meets misfortune, and nothing is then favorable to undertake. Purity of heart is not an ornament here but the condition: only the uncalculated succeeds.
The ImageUnder heaven the thunder rolls: all things attain the natural state of innocence. Thus the ancient kings, rich in virtue and in harmony with the time, nourished all beings. When the spring thunder breaks loose, everything sprouts as it was meant to: unspoiled, each after its own nature. Nourish what is entrusted to you according to its nature, not according to your plan.
InterpretationAct from the first, pure impulse, without a hidden agenda: that is the power of the uncalculated. It appears when strategic behavior only gets in your way and nothing but authenticity still works, and also when the unexpected enters your life: undeserved luck, undeserved misfortune. Both belong to this time, and both ask the same response: stay upright, do not calculate ahead, and settle no scores afterward. The warning of the Judgment is stern: those who are not pure yet play at innocence are found out, and nothing succeeds for them. You cannot fake innocence; you can only guard it by keeping your intentions clean.

Nine at the beginningruling line
Innocent conduct brings good fortune.
The first impulse of a pure heart is the best guide here: follow it, before the calculating begins. What you spontaneously recognize as right is usually more right than the tenth plan of a cunning mind; doubt often only enters along with the calculation. This is not a license for impulsiveness, but trust in the first movement of a practiced conscience. When the heart is clear, it may lead.
Six in the second place
Not counting on the harvest while plowing, not on the use of the field while clearing it:
then it is worthwhile to undertake something. Do the work for the work's sake, and let the yield follow instead of being counted in advance. If you are already harvesting while you plow, you plow worse; if you first calculate the return on every effort, you lose exactly the quality that makes returns possible. The paradox is reliable: uncalculated work pays best.
Six in the third place
Undeserved misfortune:
the cow that someone tethered is the passerby's gain, the villager's loss. Sometimes you lose something without having made a single mistake: circumstances simply take it from you. Do not take it personally and do not hunt for someone to blame, not even yourself; bad luck without a lesson is just bad luck. What counts is that you stay upright while it feels unfair. Bearing undeserved loss with dignity preserves your innocence; brooding over it in resentment is losing twice.
Nine in the fourth place
Those who can persevere remain without blame.
What is truly yours (your nature, your integrity, your way of doing things) cannot be lost, unless you give it away yourself. Do not listen to those who would talk you out of your nature because it would be more convenient: every time you betray yourself for an advantage, you pay with something that cannot be bought back. Stay true to yourself; that is literally the whole advice here, and it is enough.
Nine in the fifth placeruling line
For an illness you have not deserved:
use no remedy, it will pass by itself. Not everything that happens to you calls for intervention: conflicts, rumors, and moods that come from outside usually burn out through time and rest, and the wrong remedies only make them worse. Let it run its course, simply keep living well, and trust the self-healing; step in only when it truly does not turn around on its own. The same principle holds for the body, within the bounds of ordinary medical sense.
Nine at the top
Innocent action, when the time is not cooperating, brings misfortune; nothing is favorable.
Even purity has its hour: when the time is closed, even right action goes wrong, however clean your intentions may be. Then quiet waiting is the only right course: not because innocence fails, but because the moment can receive nothing. Being right is not enough; the time must carry it. Wait, and keep your purity for the hour that opens again.
