The Taming Power of the Small
小畜Xiǎo Chù

Above, the wind brushes along heaven, which presses upward from below with all its strength: one gentle element holds the mighty back for a while and meanwhile gathers clouds that are not yet willing to rain.
The JudgmentThe taming power of the small brings success. Dense clouds come from the west, but no rain yet. Everything stands ready and still the decision does not fall: the great is temporarily held in check by the small.
The ImageThe wind sweeps across the sky: the image of the taming power of the small. Thus the noble one refines the outward form of his nature. The wind can drive the clouds together but cannot force rain; what you can do now is work on the refinement of yourself and your work.
InterpretationThe great breakthrough is being held back by something small: a detail, a missing signature, someone's hesitation, an atmosphere not yet ripe. The shape of the hexagram says it precisely: one soft line holds five strong ones in check, as one layer of cloud holds a whole sky. Pushing does not help; the great can only be moved along gentle paths now. Everything hangs heavy with promise, but the rain does not yet fall: use the waiting time like the wind in the Image, which does not break the sky but refines it. Prepare, persuade kindly, polish the details of your plan and your conduct, at home just as much as at work. Small and steady is the only passable form of progress right now, and those who take it seriously stand ready when the sky finally breaks.

how could that be a mistake? Good fortune. You feel the way forward pinching: then calmly return to your own track instead of forcing it. The house that keeps hovering just above your budget, the degree that never warms your heart: sometimes the pinch itself is the answer. Returning to what suits you is navigation, not defeat; only someone determined to stay lost calls turning back a loss. There is no loss of face in a smooth retreat to your own ground.
Nine in the second place
Allowing yourself to be drawn along into returning:
good fortune. You see others turning back, for the same reason you feel yourself: then join them instead of pushing on alone. When level-headed friends pull their money out of that golden investment, or your hiking companion turns back on the mountain because of the weather, you do not need to play the hero. Turning back together is also progress, and it spares you the energy of a lonely fight against the spirit of the moment. Learning from other people's lessons is cheaper than finding everything out yourself; there is wisdom in choosing good company, on the way back too.
Nine in the third place
The spokes spring loose from the wagon wheels; husband and wife stand rolling their eyes at each other.
Pushing on while the time will not carry it: the vehicle breaks and relationships derail, all the way into the home. The move you force through while your partner hesitates: friction over boxes every evening that is really about something else. Stop pulling. Not everything that stands still is a problem in need of more force; some things stand still because the time says no. Answer that no with force, and you harvest quarrels and broken spokes. Patience here is not postponement but a tool.
Six in the fourth place
If you are truthful, blood disappears and fear departs:
no blame. In a tense position between strong parties, sincerity is your only real protection, and it works: stay truthful and speak honestly, and you will see threat and fear dissolve. At the table between two relatives quarrelling over the inheritance, or caught between your partner and your in-laws: one person calmly speaking the truth can relax an entire room. Play no games, pick no side out of fear; stay real, and the edge goes out of the situation.
Nine in the fifth placeruling line
Sincere and faithfully bound, you are rich in your neighbor:
loyalty makes you wealthy. What you have gains value by sharing it with those standing beside you; prosperity and strength carried together multiply instead of wearing thin. Share the windfall with those who were there in the lean months too; help your friend move house without watching the clock: wealth like that fits in no bank account. Invest in the people with whom you carry the small, and together you will soon carry the great. Networking is an empty word; mutual loyalty is not.

The rain comes, the rest comes:
that is the lasting working of character. Perseverance puts the woman in danger. The moon is almost full; if the noble one continues like this, misfortune comes. The goal of this phase has been reached: the rain has fallen, the gentle power has won. Then stop pushing. The first pain-free week after an injury is no starting signal for training twice as hard. Wanting still more after fulfillment spoils what has been achieved; the moon that is almost full should not want to become full. Take the gain, rest, and do not start the next campaign today.
