Hexagram 8
Holding Together
比Bǐ
☵ Water above, ☷ Earth below
Water on the earth seeks out every hollow and leaves no space between itself and the ground; just as closely, this sign gathers people around a shared center.
The JudgmentHolding together brings good fortune. Examine yourself as to whether you possess greatness, constancy, and perseverance; then there is no blame. The uncertain gradually come along; those who arrive too late meet misfortune.
The ImageWater upon the earth: the image of holding together. So the kings of old gave out the states as fiefs and kept up friendship with the feudal lords. Water clings to the earth without a gap; that close, that unreserved, is real connectedness.
InterpretationPeople gather around a center: a circle of friends takes on fixed form, a collaboration crystallizes, a family or neighborhood seeks its core. The sign asks two questions. To the one who wants to be the center: do you have the greatness, the constancy, and the perseverance to carry that for years? Being the center is serving with a long breath, not shining. And to the one who wants to join: do it in time and wholeheartedly, for connections have a natural setting point, and endless waiting will find the circle closed. The Image says how close it may be: like water on the earth, joining without a gap. Connection without reservation makes strong; halfhearted membership weakens everyone.
Place in the sequenceA multitude cannot do without something that holds it together. That is why holding together follows 7, The Army: out of the mass grows the circle that seeks a center. It forms a pair with 7 · The Army.

The six lines
These texts belong to changing lines in a reading, from the bottom up.
Six at the beginning
Hold to him in truth and loyalty:
that is without blame. Truth like a full earthen bowl: in the end, good fortune comes from outside. Every real bond begins with simple, unpolished sincerity; the form may be plain as long as the content is full. Invite a new friend to your kitchen table instead of to a restaurant meant to impress; on a first date, say what you are really looking for. Realness attracts the good, and what is built on show breaks as soon as it matters.
Six in the second place
Hold to him from within:
perseverance brings good fortune. Join out of conviction, because you truly find the center worthy, and not out of fear of being left out. Say yes to a love because the other has your heart, not because being alone oppresses you; take a job for the work itself, not for the false sense of security. Inner belonging may be carried with outward dignity: you do not have to throw yourself away to belong. Offering yourself out of insecurity costs exactly the self-worth that made you worth having in the bond.
Six in the third place
You are holding to people who are the wrong ones.
Attachment to the wrong company is doubly expensive: it brings you nothing, and it blocks the bond that does belong to you. Think of the friends with whom every evening ends in too much drink, or the acquaintance who only warms up when you are paying. Stay polite and human, but keep your distance in what is intimate: no secrets, no declarations of loyalty, no entangling of interests. Company out of convenience or habit literally stands in the way of friendship out of kinship; keep the place free.
Six in the fourth place
Hold to him outwardly as well:
perseverance brings good fortune. There comes a moment when inner connection has to become visible: showing your colors, giving your word, standing behind someone or something in public. Introduce the new love to your parents, call the relationship by its name, put your signature under the collaboration you have believed in for months. Do it, and stand by it. Open loyalty costs something for a moment (you can no longer belong everywhere) and yields lasting trust. Keeping every option open forever ends in belonging nowhere.
Nine in the fifth placeruling line
Holding together made manifest:
in the hunt the king drives the game from three sides only and lets escape what flees before him; the citizens need no warning: good fortune. Bind without coercion: invite, leave the door open, and let go whoever wants to go. Grant your beloved an evening without you; let the friend who stays away a while pull up a chair again without reproach. Those who come freely stay; those who are held tight look for the first crack. The strongest communities have an open gate and yet little turnover; the openness is the binding force.
Six at the top
No head is found for holding together:
misfortune. A bond without a center falls apart, and letting the right moment for joining pass means finding no way in anymore: the beginning is missed, and without a good beginning there is no good end. Think of the house that friends were going to buy together without anyone arranging the money. So do not wait endlessly where connections matter, and do not build a collaboration without a clear core. Do not keep weighing and calculating too long; before you know it you are knocking at a circle that has already closed.
