Hexagram 23
Splitting Apart
剝Bō
☶ Mountain above, ☷ Earth below
The mountain presses with all its weight upon the earth: once the ground beneath it gives way, even the highest splits apart; that slow wearing away from below is the theme here.
The JudgmentSplitting apart: it is not worthwhile to go anywhere at all. The dark is gnawing away the last strong line; the time does not support undertaking. Move now and you move on crumbling ground: keeping still is the only solid thing.
The ImageThe mountain rests on the earth: the image of splitting apart. Thus those above can only secure their position through generosity toward those below. A mountain does not stand on its peak but on its base: what totters above has been neglected below. Every collapse of authority once began as stinginess toward the foundation.
InterpretationSomething is crumbling away and can no longer be held: a phase of breakdown. The sign shows it plainly: five weak lines have hollowed out the house from below, only the roof remains. A job, a bond, an era is crumbling beneath you, and the first wisdom is the humblest: this is no moment for deeds. Stop investing in it, start nothing new on this ground, and do not fight by force against what the time itself is tearing down; you would be pulled along. The second wisdom is that of the Image: if you still carry something, strengthen the foundation, with generosity toward those beneath you. And the third is hope with a root: at the top hangs one great fruit that goes uneaten; in every downfall lies the seed of the next round. Stay whole, and you are that seed.
Place in the sequenceIt comes after 22, Grace: adornment carried to its extreme exhausts success. Where only the shine still counts, decay begins. It forms a pair with 24 · Return.

The six lines
These texts belong to changing lines in a reading, from the bottom up.
Six at the beginning
The bed is splintered at the leg:
those who persevere are destroyed; misfortune. The undermining begins at the bottom, invisibly: at the legs of the bed you rest on. The first rumors, the first people dropping away, the first small cracks in what seemed self-evident. Resistance does not help at this stage and persisting in the old makes it worse; what you can do is see, name it for yourself, and no longer lean on what is already tottering. Knowing early is the only advantage to be had here.
Six in the second place
The bed is splintered at the rim:
those who persevere are destroyed; misfortune. The breakdown has climbed to the edge: it is coming close, and you face it alone; allies have left or fallen silent. This is not the moment for heroics but for utmost caution: bend along, make yourself small, and first make sure you are standing somewhere that bears weight. Stubbornly holding your ground in a collapsing place is not courage; it is paying for the fall in advance.
Six in the third place
He breaks with them:
no blame. In the midst of the wreckers you can be tied to your surroundings without following their ways: your heart has bound itself to what rises above the decay, and so you take no part in the breaking down. That sets you against the people around you, and that is not a fault but loyalty to something better; that loyalty keeps you upright where everything crumbles. You can dwell in a wrong environment without becoming of it; it costs one clear choice, made daily.
Six in the fourth place
The bed is splintered up to the skin:
misfortune. The breakdown now touches the body itself: no longer possessions or position, but health, name, bare existence. There is nothing left to spin or to save; the misfortune is here, and the only task is to endure it. Stop rescuing what is lost and protect the minimum: your body, your mind, the people closest to you. At the deepest point of a downfall, survival is the whole agenda, and that is enough.
Six in the fifth place
A shoal of fish:
favor comes through the ladies of the court; nothing that does not further. Just before the turnaround, the dark itself comes about: like a shoal of fish behind one leader the mood turns, and what was breaking down begins to cooperate. Accept that turn without settling old scores; whoever helped break yesterday and helps build today is an ally today. The shift often comes from an unexpected corner and through gentle channels; recognize it, and do not be too proud to receive it.
Nine at the topruling line
A great fruit, still uneaten.
The noble one receives a carriage, the house of the small person is split apart. At the end of the breakdown one fruit remains hanging: the seed of the new. If you kept your integrity through the whole downfall, you are now carried (you receive the carriage, the trust, the new role), while the decay demolishes its own last house. Evil in the end eats itself; goodness that survived the winter becomes spring. So stay whole: the fruit falls to whoever is still standing then.
