Thunder above and wind below move out together, every storm different and yet always as a pair: from that faithful interplay speaks duration, movement with a lasting direction.
The JudgmentDuration: success, no blame. Perseverance brings reward; it is worthwhile to go somewhere. What has value proves itself through duration, and duration is not standstill: it is movement that holds its direction.
The ImageThunder and wind: the image of duration. Thus the noble one stands firm and does not change his direction. Thunder and wind belong together and move together, always different and always the same: the enduring is not the immovable, but the faithful. The storm may turn; the compass may not.
InterpretationAfter attraction (hexagram 31) comes duration: this sign is about everything that must last a long time. A marriage, a craft, a friendship, a life's work. It appears when the question is no longer whether you want something, but how you sustain it without it stiffening or watering down. The sign's answer is the rhythm of the seasons: the same core, performed again and again and slightly differently each time. Duration asks two things at once: a fixed direction (which you do not change with every storm) and a living execution (which you do keep renewing constantly). Let go of the first and you wobble; let go of the second and you become a museum piece of yourself.

Duration wanted too soon brings persistent misfortune; nothing is favorable.
Wanting to settle forever what has only just begun: the definitive conversation in the first week, the eternal promise on the first day. Depth cannot be forced in advance; it grows in layers, and if you claim the deepest layer right away, you crush what is alive. Give the young thing the time of the young. What is destined to last needs no haste to prove it.
Nine in the second placeruling line
Remorse vanishes.
Your strength is greater than the situation allows, and yet all goes well: because you keep to the measure of the time instead of the measure of your ability. Being stronger than your position is only a problem for those who cannot hold it in. Quietly store up your surplus power and adapt to the circumstances: that way you lose nothing and prevent everything you would later regret. Restrained strength is not wasted strength; it ripens.
Nine in the third place
Those who give their character no duration meet disgrace:
persistent humiliation. Without an inner line you become a plaything of the weather: every mood, every outside judgment, every setback flings you back and forth, and the people around you will see it and act on it. Dignity is duration in miniature: meaning today what you meant yesterday, unless there is a real reason. Build something in yourself that does not sway with every day; it is your anchor and your standing.

No game in the field.
Persistently hunting in a place where nothing lives: the most faithful dog catches nothing there. Duration is a virtue only in the right place; in the wrong place it is simply called being stuck. When effort long sustained brings no result, ask yourself honestly whether the field holds any game: the job without a future, the relationship without reciprocity, the strategy without a market. Move the hunting ground; your perseverance deserves a place where it can catch something.
Six in the fifth place
Giving one's character duration through perseverance:
that is good fortune for a woman, misfortune for a man. In every lasting bond there are two kinds of faithfulness: the faithfulness of following (moving with what the other or the situation asks) and the faithfulness of giving direction (setting and guarding the course). Both are real, but they are not interchangeable: those who should steer yet only follow are failing their duty, and those who should follow yet only steer break the bond. Know the role your place asks of you now, and be enduring in that.
Six at the top
Restlessness as a lasting state brings misfortune.
The last pitfall of duration: making the rushing a habit. Always busy, always on the way, never truly anywhere: that is duration of the wrong thing, sustained fleetingness. Never coming to rest lets nothing ripen, yourself included. If silence has become unbearable, that is the first thing that needs attention; being busy is sometimes the best disguised form of running away.
