Darkening of the Light
明夷Míng Yí

Here the fire has slipped beneath the earth: it burns on where no one sees it, and precisely that hidden glow forms the theme of this dark time.
The JudgmentDarkening of the light: in adversity, perseverance brings reward. The light itself is wounded, the times are against what is bright. What counts now is not shining but staying alight: invisible, unyielding, until the times turn.
The ImageThe light has sunk into the earth: the image of the darkening of the light. Thus the noble one lives with the great multitude: he veils his radiance and yet remains luminous. The sun below the horizon is not extinguished; it shines on unseen. Do not stand out, simply take part in the daily round, and keep everything burning within.
InterpretationThis is as dark as the book gets: folly or evil reigns, and clarity is in active danger. It appears under a bad boss, in a hostile culture, in periods when honesty is punished and visible quality is torn down. The advice is not capitulation but camouflage: protect your light by veiling it. Do your work, keep a low profile, share your real thoughts only with people they are safe with, and meanwhile yield not an inch on what you know inside. This is wintering through: bending along on the outside, unbending within. Regimes, reorganizations and dark periods pass; what matters is that your core is still there when they do.
Place in the sequenceAdvancing sooner or later meets with injury, so the sequence teaches: therefore after 35, Progress, comes the darkening, in which the light itself is wounded. It forms a pair with 35 · Progress.

Darkening of the light in flight:
he lets his wings droop. On his wanderings the noble one eats nothing for three days, but he has a goal he can move toward; the innkeeper gossips about him. Those who see the darkness early and leave at once pay for it: hunger, discomfort, and talk from people who find it overdone. Bear it. Yielding early on principle always looks hysterical to those who do not yet see the danger; a year later it is called foresight. A goal in view and some hardship along the way: that is a low price for keeping your integrity.
Six in the second placeruling line
Darkening of the light:
it strikes him in the left thigh. He helps with the strength of a horse: good fortune. Wounded, but not lamed: the attack has hit you in a place that hurts but does not make walking impossible. Use the strength you have left not for resentment but for rescue: help others to safety, with the strength of a horse. In the dark, turn your wound into carrying power for others: that is how you heal fastest yourself and build the alliances that will carry the new era.
Nine in the third place
Darkening of the light during the hunt in the south:
their great leader is captured. One must not expect perseverance too soon. Almost in passing you seize the core of the evil: the instigator falls, the proof is on the table, the chief culprit is unmasked. A great moment, but beware of expecting everything to come right quickly now: years of wrongdoing have roots in habits and people, and those do not heal with a single arrest. Give the recovery the slowness of something real; demand normality too soon and you only drive the rot underground.
Six in the fourth place
He pierces the left side of the belly and reaches the heart of the darkening of the light:
then he leaves gate and court. You have come close enough to the core to know for certain: this system, this culture, this relationship is rotten from within and cannot be turned around. That knowledge is enough; you need not wait for a second proof or attempt a rescue nobody is asking for. Leave, before the storm breaks and while the gate still stands open. You have seen the heart of the darkness; that is permission to go.
Six in the fifth placeruling line
Darkening of the light as with Prince Ji:
perseverance brings reward. The way of Prince Ji: remaining in the very court of evil, hiding your own clarity, passing for a fool if need be, and yielding not an inch within. This is the hardest form of perseverance: sometimes you cannot or may not flee, and then inconspicuousness becomes your fortress. Play the role survival demands, but retrace your own boundary inside, every day anew. Winter through like this and you enter spring with an undamaged core; that core is then worth gold.
Six at the top
Not light, but darkness:
first he climbed up to heaven, then he plunged down into the earth. The last line shows the fate of the darkness itself: the evil that first ruled everything and reached to heaven plunges down by its own nature. Oppression needs no external enemy; it devours its own foundation, for it burns exactly the light it lives on. For those beneath it, this is the long consolation: survive, stay whole, and count not on revenge but on gravity. What devours everything ends with itself.
