Above the earth the lake gathers, drop by drop into one surface of water: flowing together is the theme, with the richness and the crowding that belong to it.
The JudgmentGathering Together: success. The king approaches his temple. It is worthwhile to see the great man; that brings success, and perseverance brings reward. Great offerings bring good fortune; it is worthwhile to undertake something. Where many come together, a consecrated center is needed, leadership of stature, and the readiness to give amply yourself.
The ImageThe lake gathers above the earth: the image of gathering together. Thus the noble one keeps his weapons renewed, ready to meet the unforeseen. Where water flows together, it can overflow; where people stream together, there is crowding, friction, and sometimes worse. To gather is to prepare: precaution is not distrust but hospitality.
InterpretationPeople come together around something shared: a cause, a place, a leader, a family. It appears when a team, a community, or a movement is being built, and it names the three conditions for a gathering that lasts. First, a worthy center: people only stay together around something that deserves it (the king approaches his temple: the center is consecrated, not accidental). Second, leadership: where many are gathered, a great man is needed who gives direction, or the crowd falls apart into shoving and aimlessness. Third, generosity: great offerings bring good fortune; those who want to gather must give first and give most themselves. And the Image adds the sobriety: keep the weapons maintained, for a crowd also attracts the unforeseen.

If you are sincere, but not to the end, there is now confusion, now gathering.
If you call out, one grasp of the hand and you can laugh again: regret nothing, going is without blame. Halfhearted trust makes any group unsteady: one moment you belong, the next you stand apart, and the confusion comes from your own hesitation. The remedy is calling out: turn expressly to the center you want to belong to, and a single handshake makes the doubt ridiculous. Belonging is often one honest question away; ask it, instead of hovering.
Six in the second place
Letting yourself be drawn brings good fortune and remains without blame.
If you are sincere, it is worthwhile to bring even a small offering. There is a pull toward a certain circle, and it is right: people of your kind attract each other the way water flows together. Let yourself be drawn; what happens of itself needs neither forcing nor distrust. And do not come empty-handed, but not with display either: a small offering with a true heart is the right price of entry. Sincerity makes the small great.
Six in the third place
Gathering amid sighs:
nothing that furthers. Going is without blame; slight shame. You stand with the group and do not belong: the togetherness sighs, the connection will not come. Do not linger at the edge of the company; seek the bond with the center, even if the first step costs some pride and brings a small humiliation. Staying excluded out of woundedness is more expensive than swallowing once. And sometimes going is the answer: not every circle is yours.
Nine in the fourth placeruling line
Great good fortune, no blame.
The position of one who gathers without being the center: you bring people together for the cause and for the center, not for yourself. Precisely that selflessness brings the great good fortune: because no one has to fear a hidden agenda, they come, and they stay. Gathering on behalf of something greater may grow large; gathering for your own glory slowly empties the room. The difference can be felt in every invitation.
Nine in the fifth placeruling line
If in gathering one holds the position, there is no blame.
If some do not yet join sincerely, sublime and lasting perseverance is needed: then remorse vanishes. Not everyone comes out of conviction: some come for the position, the network, the momentum. That need not be a disaster, as long as you do not play along: win the halfhearted not with favors but with lasting sincerity. Followers become believers through what you sustain, not through what you hand out; seeing character long enough, people come to trust it.
Six at the top
Lamenting and sighing, tears in streams:
no blame. You want to belong and are not understood: the connection fails, and the grief over it is real. Let it show; showing your tears instead of forging them into resentment keeps open the door that resentment would close for good. Misunderstanding is often a misreading that one honest, vulnerable conversation can repair. Hurt that is allowed to be visible invites; hurt that armors itself confirms the distance.
